why do new dells have the ugly back part (hinge not all the way at the back)

its so ugly. it probably started with the adamo, then many started following suit. the most recent is the e6220. just ugly? I understand when the thing sticks at the back cause of an optional use of an extended battery but the dell ones you cant get rid of
