I thought it was a bad disc so I sent it back to Netflix and got a new one. Same problem.
Called Samsung support - they told me they haven't released firmware for that movie yet and don't know when it will occur? Not sure what that means . . . Is there a list of Blu-ray movies somewhere that are unplayable on Samsung products? Is this a problem on all Blu-ray players or is there a model that does a better job of keeping up with movie/studio technology?

Movie studios often change the copy-protection technology on some new or popular releases.
While this cuts down on piracy, it also sometimes renders the disc unplayable in authorized players. We provide firmware updates to address this as they appear. I'll be happy to report this title to see if a fix can be addressed.

And, one would hope Netflix would see the pattern with this DVD and raise the issue with whomever is responsible for the change.

While I agree that we're not solely responsible for copyright limitations, I've escalated this already and can do what I can do here until the next firmware update is released.
Netflix is pretty good about customer service. They may offer to ship your next disc in queue immediately for the inconvenience.

Fair enough, but why am I hearing from a/v industry installers and retailers that this isn't the first time Samsung has had this happen? Is it because SONY Motion Pictures is behind this title? Will this continue until Samung gets in bed with a studio and does the same thing to Sony? OR...is this just Samsung being slow to implement a firmware update? It could be the latter if your reporting of the incident last week is the first time anyone from your company has acknowledged the problem. From other posts it appears updates have corrected the issue with similar models....it can't be a big deal to have included the 2550, can it?
While you're at it, have or can they fix the problem with rememberng where you are on a disc if the unit gets turned off inadvertently? In other blogs someone observed the following:
"After 5 minutes of "pause", a screen saver program begins and then after 30 minutes, a "power saving" program will automatically shut off the unit. Only then does the DVD "pause" time get stored in memory, so when you "power up" the next time, the unit will start playing the DVD at the point where you previously stopped watching the DVD".
I think they are right...can there be a fix that lets the memory feature work all the time? That would also correct the 5 minute delay often experienced when the unit freezes and then stops on occasion.
Freezing seems rare and occasional. Is this related to copyright protection
too?
I recognize these units can have a short life due to obsolescence...but I'd like to think I could get a couple more years out of this player considering the price-point.
Anything you can do would help. Can I send it in and have it upgraded or credited toward a better model? I just want relaibility and would be willing to pay. I'm beginning to think adding a Playstation to mys system maybe the cheapest way.

I have also considered the ps2 alternative. These issues do not help samsung's case.

What is annoying is that the Internet updater menu in the 2550 said I had the latest firmware version, while I actually had one from April, 2009, which was several versions old! In order to install the lastest firmware, I had to follow the website instructions at http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/BD-P2550 to burn a CD and use it to install the latest version. I suspect USB stick update method would work as well.
What is the point of an Internet updater if it doesn't update to the latest version, and lies about how up-to-date the version you have is?
I hope others can get their Samsung 2550 to work with this fix. Note mine is a BD-P2550/XAA, US market; I don't know if this matters.
I also hope Salt is worth the effort

Found new firmware on Samsung website dated Dec 10th and now Salt plays normally.
Thanks!!

I guess the system updater needs updating now.....WHY IS TECHNOLOGY SO DIFFICULT?
Reply 14 : Samsung Blu-Ray 2550 won't play "SALT"
I'm always apologetic when these situations happen, however the profiles change in the Blu-ray players due to anti-piracy code enacted by the studios. This requires the firmware update in the Blu-ray players to need an update every now and then.

BTW - I downloaded the firmware, and the file downloaded as 101122_01_BDP2550_XAA.RUF What is ".RUF"? The SAMSUNG site indicated it would download as a zip file.
This is really a pain to have to deal with!

With all the rush I find some sites don't keep up with the details as you found out.

I put the DVD into the PC, and double checked the burned image, and it too showed up as an RUF (however, when I downloaded and unzipped it, it was a .ISO file).
I tried to see if the Salt DVD would load, and now my SAMSUNG Bluray player doesn't do anything but show a blank screen! I don't even get the 80% load anymore.
Thanks a lot Samsung.

And if you made a DVD from the .ISO you would have to check with Samsung if that works.

Saw the ISO as the download file, and on the DVD it had been convered to an RUF file.

we also borrowed it from a co-worker and it didnt play.
UGH! we were actually gonna go out and get a new player,so happy we didnt... wonder if its actually worth the trouble. do i really want to see this movie?
Reply 28 : Samsung Blu-Ray 2550 won't play "SALT"
Warm buttery popcorn in hand.....
Press play...... say WHA?
That really blows. I didn't even have CDs on hand, for everything is DVD now-a-days. Ruined my night.
Mind you, the kid's are stoked.... Dad's coming home with a PS3 tonight, so this doesn't happen again!
Reply 29 : Samsung Blu-Ray 2550 won't play "SALT"
What's next? What a ridiculously horrible process. To the Samsung rep on this post - thank you for trying to help. But it really is VERY frustrating to your customers when this doesn't work.
I'm going to end up throwing this player away and buying a Sony if i can't get it work soon. Can't believe it is taking this much time and effort to do this.
