hyperactive trackpad on asus netbook

I have an asus netbook and when typing anything - emails or reports, the cursor seems to jump backwards several lines if there is even the slightest hint of a touch to the trackpad. At times, a line of type is erased for a similar reason (as far as I can tell - I never hit the delete key). Every so often, the cursor freezes, as if in response to a hidden command, and nothing can be typed, or the document closed, for ten minutes, then all returns to normal. I now hold my fingers rigidly away from the track pad while typing, but even so, at times it is accidentally grazed and 'changes' are made for me that then have to be undone. This is really slowling down preparing reports, etc.

Also, scrolling is jerky when online.

Any suggestions?
