Anyone use the "new" eStore lately?

Has anyone tried to order anything from the "new" eStore since it has gone up a few months ago? I don't seem to be having much luck.

I was able to order stuff just fine from the old eStore, no problem. But this new one doesn't seem to carry anywhere near the same stock, doesn't recognize my old eStore account and seems to flake the minute you try to make an account (but works perfectly fine if I open another web browser and visit the site).

Going to email their support to see if there's just something wrong with their server right now...

Reply 1 : Anyone use the "new" eStore lately?

Theyre official RoG forums seems to be pretty shaky like their main site. Its touch an go. Not sure if its the region its hosted in. I always have trouble with sites in Taiwan, etc. Cant say I have had issues with the store but I only browse I do not buy.

XPS 17" vs. Precision M6500 vs. Alienware M17x

Hi,

I'm looking for a laptop to use both for college and some gaming. Though I do want something that is 17". I already have a netbook if I need portablility so this is not going to move to class too much.

Any thoughts between these 3? I think Precision is only one that goes to ___x1200 screen and the other two are ____x1080?

What factors should I look at to decide?

Thanks!

Reply 1 : XPS 17" vs. Precision M6500 vs. Alienware M17x

For anything gaming related, I have to say I've had nothing but problems with the Quadro GPUs on Precisions. (This is in part due to my computer being effected by the Nvidia Settlement, but I have had experience with other Quadro laptops black screening on games like World of Warcraft at all min settings, min resolution.)

To be honest, the advantage of a Quadro has never been made clear to me; and for general purposes; the demands of games will typically be higher than any regular use application you can throw at it.

I miss the 16x10 aspect but it's getting harder and harder to find anything not 16x9.

G73JH + Windows live = GSOD? Quirky coincidence...or is it?

So, I had my first GSOD the other night and it freaked me the hell out. I know this is a long post, but considering there's probably a billion words written on the subject, I figure what's a couple thousand more. For the condensed version, skip to the last three paragraphs

First, a little history. Bare with me here, I just want to make sure that all attention to detail is represented properly.

Back in December '10 I bought a G73JHRF-RBBX05 (refurb) from Best Buy. It was in absolutely perfect shape, without a single scratch, crack, smudge, or even a fingerprint that I could see. It also came with 206 BIOS, and ran 103 Celsius on Furmark within 5 minutes... Instead of freaking out and sending for an RMA, or going through the trouble of repasting, I opted to give 211 BIOS a try and was happy to see Furmark topping out at 89 Celcius on the GPU after about 20 minutes. Made me happy, made the G73 happy enough considering I would never throw anything like furmark at it for extended periods, and all was good.

The processor side was never an issue, and has always idled at around 43c, and heavy load hovers around 60c. The absolute highest I have ever seen the CPU was 67c after running OCCT for about 20 minutes.

I did Furmark, and OCCT the first day I had it to make sure that I hadn't bought a complete lemon.

All in all, not bad for 900 bucks and some change out the door.

So after making sure that everything was good with the temps, I installed an Intel X25-M 120gb SSD, and did a fresh install of W7 Ultimate 64, minus all the Asus bloatware. I updated everything that I felt necessary from the Asus website, put the OS on the SSD, data on the stock 500gb Seagate and so on. You know, standard operating procedure. Boot times were around 20 seconds, very few running processes, stable as a rock, etc..I spent a couple days installing a few gadgets, tweaking Firefox to the way I like it, installing M$ Office, and a few of my most used applications, and finally imaging the SSD to a backup on both an external 60gb HDD, and to DVD.

Since then (December) I've run Windows updates on it regularly, blown out the fans gently with canned air every couple of weeks, kept it wiped down with a microfiber cloth, and basically just took good physical and software care of it, and it only came out every few days to play Dragon Age, DA2, or Anno 1404, for a few hours at a time. I don't even web surf on it to speak of, but instead used my EeePC 1000HE for web surfing. It never hiccuped, crashed, froze, overheated, had a virus, or anything. Just what I expect from a well taken care of and administered computer.

My previous "Flagship" laptop was a HP Pavillion ZD7000 that lasted me 7 years, and still runs fine to this day, and has been handed down to the kids as a kitchen table homework computer, for those times that they're grounded from their desktops (which seems to be a lot!)

Fast forward to March, when my daughter was Mother Superior in her High Schools production of "The Sound of Music". Being the proud dad that I am, I took video at 1080p and dragged out the trusty G73 to handle the post production editing and processing duty. Our JVC Camcorder records to a hard drive in AVCHD format, and after some researching I decided that Windows Live Movie Maker was sufficient to convert the file, for uploading to Facebook.

I surfed to the Windows Live website and begrudgingly "installed the installer", for Windows Live Essentials or whatever they called it, and read every single page word for word, and ONLY checked the box to install what I originally came for, and that was Movie Maker. I made extra sure that none of the other crap was going to be included, and went about installing. Upon completion of the install, I made sure that everything had quieted down, and the installer was finished with it's spewing of crapware into my baby. As I always do, and out of habit whether it asks or not I rebooted my computer. I don't even remember if it actually asked me to reboot, but it doesn't matter since it's a habit I got into with Windows 95 that I'll probably never be broken of.

The G73 booted back up as normal, and as usual for the first minute or so I watched the temps, hard drive activity, and network activity through various W7 gadgets on my desktop that, I'm sure that I really don't need, but frankly I wouldn't drive a car without a temperature and oil pressure gauge, so if I want to know if something is going on in the background of my computer I like to have something to tell me. I hooked up the camcorder to the USB as I have many times before to archive video files, and proceeded to unload the 2.7gb file that I was after. I chose to copy the file to the SSD to take advantage of the transfer speeds once it came time to start the processing procedure.

Finally, here's where things started to get weird. While the file was being imported into WLMM, I noticed that the screen flickered all white a couple of times. Barely even noticeable, and so fast that I though I had just been seeing things. So I stared at the screen intently to make sure that I was seeing what I thought I was seeing, or if I was just getting tired. Sure enough, several times the screen flickered during the 4 or so minutes that it took to import the video. I didn't think too much about it and just chalked it up as part of the thumbnail creation process.

So I went about some minor cutting of the video, added a simple title to the beginning, and did a nice little fade to black for the end. Nothing major at all, but just enough to clean it up a little bit. The odd flickering hadn't come back at all while I worked, and when I was satisfied with my daughters little masterpiece, I decided on a preset video processing setting that would be an easy upload to Facebook, and it estimated that the finished product would be about 110mb. I felt that this was the best compromise in quality and compression, and knew that Facebook would be applying there own compression to it anyway.

Now for the part that I was waiting anxiously for, I clicked on "Make Movie" and watched in wonderment as the i720 made minced meat of the conversion process. What would have taken 2+ hours on my P4 3.0ghz HP Pavilion took about 20 minutes on the G73. I intently kept one eye on the CPU temperatures throughout the process and the maximum temp I saw was 59c, it may have bumped 60c once or twice, but it averaged about 57c. I reached behind in order to feel the heat coming out of the left exhaust vent and it was warm for sure, and the fan was definitely kicked into a higher gear, but I don't believe that it was at 100% speed. Out of curiosity, I felt the right side exhaust to see if the GPU was working hard at all, and the temperature seemed to be about what it is when at full idle. I concluded that the whole procedure was completely CPU centric, as I suspected that it would be.

Satisfied with the video, and with the file ready to be uploaded, I closed out of WLMM, and got ready to settle into a nice little marathon of Dragons Age 2. Before I could even launch DA2, the screen freaked out on me several times in a row. Like my whole desktop turned 45 degrees for a split second and flashed black. Rather disgusted with what I figured was buggy Microsofts Movie Maker, I re-booted, and clicked on the DA2 shortcut. The game loaded fine, and I was up and running within 30 seconds. (Love that SSD)

I'm about 15 hours into DA2 without as much as a stutter in the gameplay. It's been absolutely a great experience having the power of the G73 to play one of my favorite series in gaming. All that changed when all of the sudden the screen went all gray, and I had absolutely no control over anything. No esc., no Ctrl,Alt,Del, no windows key. Basically completely locked up. I was so shocked that I didn't even realize that I had the famous GSOD right there in front of me. I thought the game had crashed. Now keep in mind, I've NEVER to this point had to hard kill my G73, and I absolutely dreaded the thought of holding down the power button.

I sat there for probably 5 minutes waiting for the screen to do something. (To this point I still hadn't realized what I actually was looking at.) So while waiting I grabbed my iPhone and searched Google for the term "DA2 crashing Chantry" since I was in the big Chantry battle with about 14 characters on the screen. Nothing really relevant came up, and I thought it odd that I was the only one having this problem. So I had to do it...the dreaded hard shut down with the power button. Again, this was the first time I've ever had to do this to this laptop.

After restarting, I tried again, and again it crashed immediately in the very beginning of my battle. So now I was starting to get worried that I would damage the file system with all these stupid hard shut downs, and I gave up on DA2 for the night. I only restarted the computer to check for Windows updates, then had a normal shut down, and went to bed figuring I would take the G73 to work with me and patch DA2 or whatever. While I laid in bed, stewing about DA2 forcing me to do a hard shut down not once, but twice, it dawned on me what I may have been seeing. All this time reading the forums, and seeing GSOD this, and GSOD that, the whole time I thought it stood for "GreenSOD"...My heart sunk when I realized that I probably was mistaken in my acronym assumption...

So, the next day I brought the G73 to work, and before doing anything even remotely constructive, I loaded up Furmark to see what my temperature would be under heavy load. 10 seconds into the run, not even in ex

Reply 1 : G73JH + Windows live = GSOD? Quirky coincidence...or is it?

Simple question: Did you ever update your BIOS and video BIOS? You should be running BIOS 213 + video BIOS 012.020.000.032.0383.G730 (as reported in BIOS) 012.020.000.032.038352 (as reported by HW apps). If not, then you should do this pronto. The vBIOS was updated to fix this crashing/GSOD issue. You'll need a bootable USB drive formatted to FAT32. Tools are in the package, see links below.

This combo will allow you to use the latest AMD driver releases.

Yeah Chastity, in the second to last paragraph, even gave you props for the solution. Thanks again!

I spent the entire day (at work) going through your post at ROG...G73 Series Driver and Application Reference

And I updated what I felt was necessary including BIOS, VBIOS, Catalyst, and the Seagate firmware. I skipped the trackpad drivers because I'm happy with W7's native drivers, the audio drivers because when I did a fresh install I skipped the Creative drivers and used the current Realtek which have been fine. I also skipped the core drivers because I feel that they're working fine for now, but will probably update when CCC 11.4 becomes official.

I've gotta say, had it not been for you keeping that post updated, it would have been a lot more work! And for that, I'm gonna throw ya some rep.

Whoa... What happened to BF:BC2?

So I put this game up for some time.

I used to play it on my desktop and PS3 and was used to the solid fluid gameplay, especially on max settings (desktop).

Then I bought the G73, and the performance was obviously not equal to my deceased desktop powerhouse.

I was a little upset and tried to deal with not being able to play it the way I used to, and I put the game away for a bit.

Not until last week did I try it again and HOLY CRAP.

Max settings and it's butter? What happened? Was it a combination of drivers/game patches? It's night and day, not even joking.

Did anyone else notice this? Did I miss a huge announcement that they turned down the suck?

I'm not holding my breath for BC3, but that's obviously using new tech that the G73 will likely not be as best matched.

Reply 1 : Whoa... What happened to BF:BC2?

It was drivers that I noticed fixed the game for me and it will probably be the same with BC3 however the G73 is a beast and should have no problem at all with BC3 on at least high settings when it is released.

Reply 2 : Whoa... What happened to BF:BC2?

That would be good news.... Now that I finally can play BC2 the way I want to, I need to actually play and get better.

Amazing the way drivers can change things.

I have never got into COD since number 4 after that I moved over to Bad Company 2 and its a great game kept me going for months online the Medic is such a quality option.

In fact now you've mentioned it im gonna play it when I get home tonight

Reply 4 : Whoa... What happened to BF:BC2?

Are you on steam? If so, lets exchange id's.

I'm mostly recon/assault. I've dabbled with the medic and engineer, but not quite my play style.

I either like to run and gun, or sit and wait.

Reply 6 : Whoa... What happened to BF:BC2?

I recently started playing BC2 also and noticed too that it is running very smooth lately.

Its nice to actually have time to play games on my G73 again.

Reply 7 : Whoa... What happened to BF:BC2?

I mentioned this in the 11.4 drivers thread. It literally doubled my FPS in BC2 @1080p. It's amazing.

Reply 8 : Whoa... What happened to BF:BC2?

Those are the drivers that have not yet come out? The beta ones?

Yup. I'd check 'em out if I were you. Just make sure you get the mobility version. Amazing performance increases for me.

unraid RAID0?

Hi,

I have Sony Z with 2 SSDs in RAID0. My only concern with it - if one drive fail - then i loose whole RAID0. So i am thinking to make 2 separate drives. I will loose some speed, but gain in recovery, although i am planning to make regular backups. So, any drawback on this solution?

Thanks

Alex

Reply 1 : unraid RAID0?

Nope not really any drawbacks as far as I know except loss of speed. I have a Z with quad-raid and I split it so I have 2 drives each in RAID 0. Works fine.

Reply 2 : unraid RAID0?

Can the two drives be converted to RAID1?

As far as I know, Sony has disabled everything except RAID 0 in the BIOS, despite the controller supporting 0, 1, 01 and JBOD

vista boot problem... need help!!!

when i press the power button, the asus logo comes up then the vista and the loading screen. while loading, the screen will just go blank and then nothing happens. what's happening here? i can still go to safe mode though. any help would be appreciated thanks!!!

Reply 1 : vista boot problem... need help!!!

What system do you have? Did you upgrade the video drivers before this happened, or change anything else?

Reply 2 : vista boot problem... need help!!!

i have a g71gx with vist 64... i really didn't do anything with it... i just left it running for the whole night. when i woke up in the morning, i found it turned off and it just won't boot correctly.

Reply 3 : vista boot problem... need help!!!

Have you tried removing the battery and ac power and letting it sit for a minute or two? This will reset the EC (embedded controller).

Try running a disk check from safe mode:

Check your hard disk for errors

How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk) - Windows 7

You can try booting in debug mode (enable boot logging):

Advanced startup options (including safe mode)

You can also try the Last Known Good configuration boot option.

If none of that leads anywhere, the next thing I'd do is run memtest86+ to check your RAM.

Reply 4 : vista boot problem... need help!!!

how do i check if my gpu/gpu driver is messed up?

Reply 5 : vista boot problem... need help!!!

It's impossible to tell if your system won't boot up, you can try reinstalling the gfx drivers from safe mode.

Reply 6 : vista boot problem... need help!!!

don't know what happened but i can now log to my OS.. i restarted the notebook while in safe mode. after that it's all ok now... didn't even do anything just uninstalled by AV. now i'm scared to turn it off. it might now work again.

i think its a bad review. Look at the graph comparisons between the l501 and the l501. Some how l502 wins in 3dmark and loses in games.....

-EDIT

OK i did a lil research the l501 is running 720p screen and 425m while the l502 is running 1080p. I guess the extra clocks of the 540m Do not make up enough horsepower to cover the big resolution change.

Good call. Some of the comparisons for games were done at different resolutions which accounts for the discrepancies.

I do not know much about the edge, but here are some general advice:

1. Do you need a laptop?

2. What are your needs for your laptop/what do you plan on using the laptop for?

I do know that all thinkpads are solid and I suggest your go to the store and see if you can type on the island style keyboard and general feel of the laptop. If you enjoy the laptop and plan to watch youtube videos/HD video, web browsing, documents, then yes, the laptop is works for you.

Reply 2 : Should I buy this 14" i5 Lenovo Edge?

Computerneb- Thanks for your comments. Yes, I do need a laptop for small business purposes... to do book keeping; some website edting; and to have access to my email when I'm traveling. I was originally considering a 15.5 " z560 ideapad with an i3 processor, but now I'm considering this Thinkpad edge, which will also be better for travel purposes.

I guess what I'm asking is if this laptop is a good value, reliable etc, etc.... Thanks again.

Reply 3 : Should I buy this 14" i5 Lenovo Edge?

I bought my wife a 15" Edge with the i3 processor and it is a nice, solid system. It does everything she needs it to do: Office 2010, online work (she is a teacher that needs to access her school's web server from home), email, etc. I was pleasantly surprised how well the standard wireless card connected in our house. I have an access point and the connection anywhere in our house is amazing. The keyboard is very good.

I looked at the configuration of the Edge you linked us to and that is a excellent deal especially by the fact that it has the i5, 4 gigs of RAM and a 500 gig harddrive. You can't configure this system for less on Lenovo's site.

By the way, the 14" Edge with the Intel processor is a best seller as per Lenovo. For what you want to do this should do you fine.

Route414- Thanks. I"m heading to the store now... because they only "have one left." Thanks again.

1) If I don't have Client Security Solutions installed do applications still use it?

2) What applications actually use the TPM chip?

3) If I use the TPM chip does that mean that the passwords for lets say IE9 are no longer stored in settings, but on the chip only?

Thanks guys.

oooooo, thanks Keith1341

edit:

Seems well overpriced. 4gb ram? come on now!

for 1100 bucks plus tax I'd rather have the g73JH-bst7.

I think at maybe 999 or 949 it's a good deal.

Reply 2 : Best Buy G53SW-BST6

The G53SWs with SB-i7s should be out an day then. I agree though I'd much rather have my RBBX05, although I don't know for sure, I doubt the i5-2410 could out perform a i7-720qm, especially since it is limited to 4 threads, although it could be better on single threaded apps. If it was slightly cheaper it would be a great mid-range system.

UPDATE, according to this...

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

A i5-2410 is marginally faster than a i7-720, but slower than a i7-740. So for all intents and purposes you could say they are equal but one us better at 8 threads and one is better at 4.

This makes the 53SW-BST6 acceptable, but considering $200 more (after adjusting for tax) will get you a G73SW-XA1 with up to 50% more CPU power, it will really depend on what the buyer wants. If you are playing StarCraft 2 an can use a 2630s CPU power, then get the G73SW, if you are playing BFBC2 and the extra CPU power is irrelevant then this laptop is a great deal.

Like I said man, in the $900 dollar range, I think its a bangout deal. Just upgrade the ram to 6-8gb and your ready to rock and roll.

Probably Best Buy keeping their cost down and increasing profit.

Wow, stupidest question I ever heard lol no offense. Of course the dual exhaust is still there and the reason you are not seeing it is because of the picture.

for 1100 bucks plus tax I'd rather have the g73JH-bst7.

I think at maybe 999 or 949 it's a good deal.

I don't see any problem with the price of it, ram is cheap and you can get another 4gb ram for less than $50 bucks.

The problem I have with best buy watered down versions are the way they subsidize it by removing bluetooth, lowering resolution and removing 2yr warranty and 1 yr accidental and replacing it with the 1yr warranty which you also have with your g73jh BB version.

That was kind of my point. I didn't state it very well. I would rather spend that same 1100 bucks and get my computer. Yes I know there is a size difference.

I sometimes wish I would have gotten a g53, but then again, I love my computer.

Are these numbers too hot??????

Just switched out the 60GB factory hard drive in the CF-29 for the Samsung 160GB drive many folks are recommending. Now I'm running a lot faster, but the heat has increased to:

Operating System

MS Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP3

CPU

Intel Pentium M 738

Intel Pentium M 738

Dothan 90nm Technology

RAM

1.5GB DDR @ 166MHz (2.5-3-3-7)

Motherboard

Matsua Electric Industrial Co.,Ltd. CF29-3 (IC1) 50 C

Graphics

Default Monitor (1024x768@60Hz)

Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller

Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller

Hard Drives

156GB SAMSUNG SAMSUNG HM160HC (PATA) 37 C

IS THIS TOO HOT TO RUN THE MOTHERBOARD ALL DAY, OR IS THIS NORMAL????? APPRECIATE ANY FEEDBACK.

Reply 1 : Are these numbers too hot??????

I used cputhermometer to monitor the temps on the cf-29's mostly mk4-5's when upgrading hdd's, ram, wifi, touchscreens, whatever. The temps would start out high 20's and you would have to shut down the laptop and then start up the app again to get an accurate reading. Then the temps would go high 30's and if upgrading OS up into the mid to high 50's. Of course I would either use new thermal pads(heat dissipation rubbers) either heartlands OEM material or the frozencpu material and even did the heatpipe mod by placing some of the thermal pad that seemed to transfer more of the heat to the base of the laptop. It got warmer by doing this. Since those mods were done temps seemed to never get above mid 50's even with cpu intensive use applications. From what your numbers show it looks like a good range and not excessive. Some of the forum members said their readings got up into the 80's but they were using only artic silver5 ceramic and nothing else or AS5 with reused heat pads or just reused heat pads. The pads re-use if not too brittle seem to work well. the new pad material works as well and some better. No numbers here just observations by doing 15-20 of them. Some say not to mix the AS5 with the pad material but so far I've not seen anything bad yet. Hope this helps and hope I read your question right........Driller

No worries @50

The max for the Pentium M: is 100 C

Would it display the notebook screen if i use a male to male Vga monitor cable as both have this female connection?

Yes use VGA to VGA or hdmi to hdmi, also you need 3.5mm headphone cord if you want sound. Plug laptop to tv, turn on tv and select pcsource on tv then power up laptop.

Backup data from Z11 RAID0 SSD drives without the PC

My SONY Z11 recently got overheating problem and sent to SONY for repair. After three months of back-and-forth phone calls, SONY decided they will not be able to get it fixed and want to offer a buy-back.

The problem is that I did not anticipate the laptop will never come back and did not back up the data. Now SONY sent me the two SSD drives (2x 256GB Samsung SSD) that were configured in RAID0 when they were in the system.

These drives uses the special connectors (not mSATA) that some of the threads mentioned. Without the Z11 chasis and its RAID controller, I have no idea how to get these two SSDs connected up to a PC and get recognized as a RAID0 so that I can take the data off. HELP!

Get the cables that connected the drives to the mobo's sata ports then connect to a motherboard that can support RAID0 and see if they'll work. Ask Sony if they can send you the cables... (or if they can recover the data for you). That's all i can think of right now...

Unfortunately the ribbon cable you're talking about is ZIF socketed on the motherboard side as well. The only possibility so far is to get another Z11 to hook your SSDs up for backup.

That is what I am afraid of. My Z11 is no longer available. What I do have is the Z13. But I don't think the ZIF cable works on Z13 though. How can I get a hold of a working Z11? Can't even find them as open box in any retail stores.

The Z11/Z13 dont have different motherboards right? However, some of the Z12/Z13 use some toshiba drives that use mSATA connectors, but some of the ones with higher capacity drives use samsung drives still. Maybe open them up to see?

Will opening it up void the maufactures warranty and the SONY extended warranty? I am at a junction of weighing my options. Thanks

XPS 410 not upgradeable to windows 7

When I ran the checkup for windows 7 it said that the system could not be upgraded. It looks like all the parameters are there. I updated the BIOS. Why wouldn't it be upgradeable?
It came with Vista, 4 MB memory, large HD, etc

Reply 1 : XPS 410 not upgradeable to windows 7

I wonder if what it said was "TRUE"? That is, some systems can't be upgraded but they have to be CLEAN INSTALLED. One is not the other.

Now while Dell does not supply drivers, this machine isn't that bizarre that I couldn't find drivers for the chipset and most of the video cards it used. I can't tell if the audio would work but it might.

Any system that runs Vista should be able to run Windows 7. Here's a post in the Dell forums where a user describes doing this successfully:

Cisco WET200

At our main building we have an IP range of 192.168.0.x 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.254
At our other Location we have an IP rang of 192.168.2.x 255.255.255.0 192.168.2.2

Heres what I am trying to do.

I have a Cisco WET200 at that location for 2 PC's but I can connect to it but I can't get any web traffic.

On the wired clients at that location I have no problem getting on the web.

On the WET200 I can not see where to connect a Ethernet port (For Web traffic) All I can seem to do is to Connect to another WAP.

At our other location we have a 10/100 3Com hub and 2500 Cisco Router

Thanks

Reply 1 : Cisco WET200

You have the wrong device. This is a bridge not a access point. It will let you connect ethernet type devices to a wireless network. Depends how you are getting to the other location. If it is ethernet then you need a access point. If it is wireless ie you are using this box as a bridge to get there. You either need to replace it with what is called a wireless repeater or extender. You could also plug a access point into one of the ethernet ports which would in effect make it into a extender.

Dell Inspiron E1505 Upgrading Laptop

I purchased the Dell Inspiron E1505 in 2006 and plan on upgrading it.

I have purchased a few items to do so but I am unsure if they will all work in the unit.

I purchased a 320 GB hard drive specifically made for an E1505 model.

A new battery made for the E1505.

A 2GB Ram card also fitting the specs.

What I am wondering is this:

Are there any unforeseen issues that may occur by adding these to the unit therefore replacing the older counterparts?

I know I will need to Install an Operating System (Windows 7) but is there anything else out there to be wary of?

I will eventually be looking to replace hinges and Bezel due to wearing out after use.

What I would really like to replace is the Graphics card and utilize the 2nd Ram slot with another Ram card (preferably a 4GB).

Any ideas on the Graphics card replacement?

Will it require a motherboard replacement?

I am having a hard time finding a 4GB Ram card DDR2 for my laptop as well.

Reply 1 : Dell Inspiron E1505 Upgrading Laptop

Hello.

Graphics card replacement/upgrade is generally not possible. Which graphics card does your laptop have? ATi X1300, Ati X1400, or Intel?

Regarding RAM, note that your laptop can have a max of 4GB total. (closer to 3.5GB)

You can mix RAM sizes and as such you can have the new 2GB RAM card plus one of the old ones.

Before you install Windows 7, it would be good to source proper drivers for Windows 7 first (the Windows Vista drivers should also be alright), though Windows 7 will likely install most devices automatically besides the card reader.

Laptop Coolers and G73/53 series

Someone was asking about coolers on asusrog.com, so I decided to post a copy here of my response:

Quote:

If the cooling system is running right, you shouldn't need one. I do have several, mostly to test and to use for comfort. I have the Targus ChillMat, Thermaltake's Massive23 LX, and CoolerMaster's SF19.

the Targus's fans run quiet but offer low airflow, and they are placed up high, which is away from the air intakes on the bottom of the G73 series. They are powered off the USB. This unit is very comfortable in the lap for extended periods of time, as weight is evenly distibuted.

The Thermaltake is about the same size as the Targus, with a massic 23mm fan, which runs at a low RPM off the USB. Airflow is more evenly distributed. In the lap, the weight is mainly focused on the rear, making it somewhat uncomfortable, as the rear ridge is applying the weight to one's thighs.

CoolerMasters's SF19 is more spacious, has a USB3 port hub, but is powered from an AC brick as opposed to the USB port. The 17.3" is smaller than the cooler, and sports twin 140mm fans. These fans are standard case fans, so you can swap them out for other models if desired. The SF19 fits comfortably on the lap with even weight distribution, tho not as comfy as the Targus with its soft padding.

Furmark results (Ambient 20C) with 800/1450 OC on G73JW-A1

Temps: GPU / CPU Core 0

No additional cooling: 83C | 58C

Targus Chillmat: 83C | 58C

Thermaltake Massive23 LX: 82C | 58C

CoolerMaster SF19 (Max Fan): 76C | 56.5C (Idle temps: 33C | 38C)

As the stats show, only the SF19 generates enough air pressure to actually affect temps much on the G73JW. If the mesh cover had larger venting holes, I believe the cooling results would improve significantly, as I feel the small hole mesh is choking airflow of the twin 140mm fans. The included fans are also quite noticeable at max fan rate. It would be interesting to swap out the fans for some quieter fans of decent quantity airflow.

New 1727 / GX740 / Medion Akoya X7811 Vbios ! PowerPlay, Overdrive, etc. all working

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

This vbios was Extracted from a Medion Akoya X7811 (french edition) which is a notebook based on the same chassis as the 1727 whitebook, and the GX740, which is why I'm posting this here.

This vbios is the most recent that you will find at the moment for the HD5870 mobility, and it works flawlessly with all the catalyst center options (powerplay, overdrive, etc.)

Many people have tested it in germany on their X7811 since @tilla told them about it. They had no issue so far and were able to undervolt their GPU and thus gain quite a few degrees.

My current voltage settings are 0.8V on idle and 0.95V on load. I still have to understand why on sector while idle, I'm still getting 0.9V instead of 0.8V, but I think reinstalling ccc will figure this out.

So anyways. Here's a tutorial on how to edit an ATI bios, and then how to flash it on your machine :

techPowerUp! :: Tutorial on how to use RBE (Radeon BIOS Editor)

This is a tutorial that will explain how to overclock, but you can undervolt just the same way.

Here's the bios info :

Imageshack - biosinfo.jpg

Here's the default settings :

Imageshack - defaultvd.jpg

And my current settings :

Imageshack - currentsettings

Imageshack - furmark82.jpg

1minute Furmark bench O/C to 740/1000 @ 0.95V with CCC overdrive :

Pm me if you want to have this bios, I'll give you the link for it.

If I have missed something or if you would like to have more info on this, more tests or anything, I will try my best to fix my OP

Update : After uninstalling ccc and cleaning registry with ccleaner + reboot, everything is working fine. 405/1000 @ 0.8 on idle, switches to 700/1000 @ 0.95 on load (yes, without powerplay, don't ask me how !!!) and switches to 300/400 @ 0.8 on battery, still with no powerplay. I will install catalyst again and see what happens then

New Sony Vaio Z speculation/news thread

We have a thread for the Sony SA/SB Series, so I think it's right to have a thread for one of the greatest laptops out there's future.

What we know:

-The graphics solution is something "unique" - speculation is the graphics card is built into a dock

-The case is significantly smaller, and small enough to the point where a normal hard drive most likely won't fit.

Speculation/questions:

-Battery life? Sandy Bridge processors have come a long way in terms of battery life, but how much battery life can we expect from the new Z?

-1080p screen, fullsized backlit keyboard, keeps the tiny bezel? All important factors into what makes the current Z unique.

-Is the Z just going to become a MacBook Air competitor, or is it going to retain the full power of a mainstream laptop into a 13" ultraportable? Quad-Core perhaps?

Reply 1 : New Sony Vaio Z speculation/news thread

Good idea to have this thread.

Two more things:

- It's expected sometime early summer

- Will be very different from current Z

And big thanks to Beaups for sharing all this information/hints with us.

Reply 2 : New Sony Vaio Z speculation/news thread

I think it may have been deduced that this model will retain an optical drive due to Sony's tie ins with Blu-Ray technology and how they would not abandon that on their flagship computer.

Reply 3 : New Sony Vaio Z speculation/news thread

i hope blu-ray drive isn't built-in on the new Z, that would be an instant fail. Optical drive on laptop is NOT the future.

Reply 4 : New Sony Vaio Z speculation/news thread

Memory Stick slot is still on the current Z.......

I don't think BR Drive will be gone in the near future....

I hope the new version of 13" macbook pro will come with SSD RAID, IPS Full HD Screen, no optical drive, longer battery life with sandy bridge, thinner/lighter chasis and the aluminium unibody that does not wear off......

this is going to be the truely ultimate notebook .....

recent rumor has it, new macbook pro will use amorphous alloy as the unibody material. it helps macbook pro drop 20% off its weight. Apple will be the first and only company offers amorphous alloy casing on a laptop.

Reply 6 : New Sony Vaio Z speculation/news thread

If they wont drop that stupid uber-glossy display, they can do whatever they want... it'll still be a sucky lifestyle notebook and nothing more

Reply 7 : New Sony Vaio Z speculation/news thread

One thing that bothers me about the current Macbook "Pro" 13" (and maybe 15" but I've only seen this problem on the smaller ones) is that the screen touches the keyboard when closed and since the screen is plastic, the keyboard scratches it almost on the whole surface area. It's very ugly.

Reply 8 : New Sony Vaio Z speculation/news thread

Let's go back to the Z (I see more than enough Macbooks each day, don't want to see them even in the new Z thread ):

I would like it if it has ODD. I use it very rarely, but sometimes I need one.

And besides, one of the most unique things about the Z is that it's a desktop replacement in a small, light-weight package. It has almost everything inside (good CPU, lots of RAM, ODD, dedicated GPU, relatively large SSD/HDD, etc.). A Z without ODD and dedicated GPU wouldn't be so appealing to me.

Reply 9 : New Sony Vaio Z speculation/news thread

On the other hand you can realise a better cooling system or a longer battery life but simply dropping the odd which is not needed often.

I'd like to drop the ODD in favor of 2hrs more battery life and less noise.

Since I think GPU's don't need much space and since you can always switch to Intel's GPU solution, you wouldn't win much by dropping the dedicated GPU.

They really should bring nVidia stock driver support, so you can use that Chip for CUDA.

G73JH stating 99% plugged in, charging all the time

Hi there,

Just noticed that my G73JH now reports, in the bottom right power icon, 99% or 98% plugged in, charging. It doesn't go to 99 or 100% charged (or "not charging", I forget) like it used to.

The battery icon LED in front of touchpad reports a green battery, which indicated fully charged. It is orange when charging.

Question is, is the battery actually constantly trying to charge, or is it simply an error in how windows reports?

Only thing I can think of I changed recently was to install win7 x64 SP1.

I presume the green icon on the battery on the exterior of machine is what you'd go by, only concern is I don't want the battery constantly trying to charge when full.

Have replaced smoke alarm batteries in-case the laptop catches alight while charging at night!

It is functioning perfectly. It is deliberately allowing the battery to drop to 95% and then charge back to 100%. Supposedly this lengthens the life of the battery as it's not charging all of the time.

Reply 2 : G73JH stating 99% plugged in, charging all the time

The thing to go by is indeed the LED on the laptop, since that is controlled by your EC and not software. My guess is you need to reinstall the atk package or power4gear or both, or that SP1 trashed something related to ACPI/power management.

As Networc pointed out, the battery shouldn't charge past around 95% and this is clearly laid out in most ASUS manuals. It's to prevent overcharging. However if windows still reports it is charging even when the battery light is green, you have some sort of software issue going on, I wouldn't expect it to be a hardware problem unless it always stays orange for charging.

Cheers for the reassurance. As it coincided with my first couple of GSOD since I updated the Vbios I was worried!

I think I have fixed it by shutting down, removing battery, and holding power button.

Now it is showing 100% fully charged. Might install Power4Gear too... hadn't bothered to put it back on since I did a reinstall of Windows7 when I got a SSD.

Thanks again!

Lol, I always keep the battery out of my laptop (I only put it in when I take it somewhere) to keep the battery healthy and reduce the overall heat of the laptop.

I am against P4G. Others like the customizability ... I find windows offers the same options, though.

Reply 6 : G73JH stating 99% plugged in, charging all the time

Yup, it's fine. Laptops generally do this to prevent overcharge, therefore giving your battery more full usages and a longer life.

Reply 7 : G73JH stating 99% plugged in, charging all the time

mines 99% percent also. Sometimes reads as low as 97%. Doesn't worry me though as its to prevent overcharging or something. Anyways I'd love to take the battery out, but i have small kids who like to trip and unplug it alot. It would be a hassle if when they unplugged it went off completely.

Using 3g/4g on Thinkpad

I am wondering how many people their built in gobi/ wimax cards... and if they can use them together...

The reason I ask is that we have 2 t410s and 1 x201 we are thinking about getting our gobi and wimax activated. Can Sprint or Clear activate both of the cards on there as one service? Since they offer 3g/ 4g cards, can they both be activated as one unit and authenticate fine on the network.

Anyone have any experience with this, we are using usb plug ins and I think we are all wanting to switch over to onboard data cards.

Thanks

Reply 1 : Using 3g/4g on Thinkpad

Clearwire is Wimax only I think. Sprint can do Evdo and WiMax service. I think maybe it should work, Sprint does sell a laptop that supports this: link

But you'll have to talk to their customer service.

Reply 2 : Using 3g/4g on Thinkpad

I tried to talk to them and half say it will work the other half have no clue.

I think the issue comes down that the gobi and the wimax are separate devices and that might cause an issue especially if someone gets it hooked up and then they could use two separate laptops to get on the net at the same time.

They really dont have a way to police it.

I would like to take advantage of the internal antenna since I noticed that the wimax is a lot faster when using the built in card.

Has anyone every tried to activate them not under one account?

Reply 3 : Using 3g/4g on Thinkpad

You can use only one connection at a time - AFAIK, the WiMax runs off the intel 6250 Wifi card and the WWAN runs off the Gobi WWAN. you can't use both connections simultaneously.

Reply 4 : Using 3g/4g on Thinkpad

That I get... but the issue lies in being able to activate both of the cards under one service plan....

If I have to pay for both of the services separately, it will increase the cost of service.

Reply 5 : Using 3g/4g on Thinkpad

You might want to try posting this at dslreports.com.

Reply 6 : Using 3g/4g on Thinkpad

I see - your service provider will not let you do that because it will hurt his revenues! they will insist separate service plans for both.

For example, I tried asking my service provider if he could give me a duplicate SIM for my phone and my laptop - the idea being I could share the voice/data plan between my laptop and phone. they refused it outright and insisted I get separate sim cards for both devices.

Reply 7 : Using 3g/4g on Thinkpad

I guess I will just keep my USB data card and see if sprint will let me transfer the service onto my laptop.

CF-29 New Install XP on 80 Gb IDE HDD

Hello,

Bit of a noob to toughbooks, First one I have and I love it, well I will when I get it up and running !

Its a CF-29ETKGHKE with BIOS V2.00L16

This reports the Master as 80 GB Hard Drive

and Slave as the DVD/CD

It has been wiped before I bought it and has a 80Gb IDE HDD

I have a USB floppy and it has a DVD/CD drive,

When I try to install XP PRO

It doesn't see the hard drive

I guess it needs a SCSI / RAID driver installed when you press F6.

I've looked around, but it's hard to find which file I need to do this.

I've tried f6fd_74_3_d070637.exe to make a floppy to add drivers, but it didn't work.

Incidentally when I press any key after it doesn't find the drive it goes to BSOD.

Can anyone help, I'd very much appreciate some experienced knowledge ?

Best regards

Steve

If the BIOS see's the 80GB hdd you should be set to go. You need no drivers for it. Something you should look into is the restore disks for it. it has an image of the harddrive when it was shipped from the factory....no drivers to load and in about 25 minutes you are done .

Reply 2 : CF-29 New Install XP on 80 Gb IDE HDD

Thanks for the reply toughasnails,

The bios see's the 80 Gb HDD alright.

XP installs so far but when it comes to the install on which drive stage of the process, a box appears with...

"76317 MB Disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi

(setup cannot access this disk)"

then if I press ENTER it goes to BSOD at setupp.sys

I have only tried with the drivers for a CF-30F as I have none for mine!

I guess my question is which files similar to f6fd_74_3_d070637.exe in the case of a CF-30F (mk2) do I need for my CF-29E(mk2)

and which driver to choose ?

or

Do you thnk it could possible be the bios and it needs updating, If so where do i get updates ?

Many thanks

Steve

Reply 3 : CF-29 New Install XP on 80 Gb IDE HDD

Why does it see the CD DVD as Slave? Mine all need the optical drive to be Master. Mk2/Mk3's

SWAG is that may be the problem.

Reply 4 : CF-29 New Install XP on 80 Gb IDE HDD

Sorry not slave dohhh

it say's

Primary Master 80 GB

Secondary Master CD/DVD Drive

also when I boot from a xpbootdisk, It can't see a C: drive, it's as if no drive is installed.

I am also told if the HDD is a IDE drive then I don't need to install any third party SCSI driver to see it, it should just work ! (I wish)

Which has me thinking now its something to do with the BIOS not reporting the correct credentials for the HDD ??

Where's the hammer Argghhh !!

Cheers

Steve

Reply 5 : CF-29 New Install XP on 80 Gb IDE HDD

hi Steve,

greetings from the yorkshire dales.

Just wondered if you were reformatting the HDD during the install.

i had a similar problem on a 28 that would not install XP untill I reformated.

More usefull advice to come from other members who know what they are doing i'm sure.

Reply 6 : CF-29 New Install XP on 80 Gb IDE HDD

Hi Dentsmithy Greetings from the rainy north east

I'd like to format it but I can't even see it

I just tried booting with a win98 bootdisk and doing FDISK but it comes back with

"Error reading fixed disk"

So I'm thnking now the HDD is broken, so my next step is to try another, but I haven't got one lying around, so might be a while.

I must say the support on here is excellent, so fast and friendly, nice, thanks to all.

Cheers

Steve

You may wish to contact the seller. I vote that the drive is going bad or is already dead.

Reply 8 : CF-29 New Install XP on 80 Gb IDE HDD

Do I understand that you are trying to use a CF-30 restore disk on a CF-29? Please clarify, what source are you using for XP? Your CF-29 requires no "drivers" to install Windows XP, OEM, retail, or restore disks. If you don't have a restore disk you can download the required drivers for your specific machine from any of the sources listed in the "stickies" at the top of the first page of the forum, the ones that ask you to please read before posting.

Reply 9 : CF-29 New Install XP on 80 Gb IDE HDD

I had lots of problems installing XP on an 80Gb IDE drive, The BIOS see's the drive, but XP won't, or a bootdisk or anything else apart from the BIOS, So my guess is the HDD is "Knackered", I did try installing some SCSI drivers (CF-30 as I could only find that) with the F6 option on XP install, but of course that didn't fix anything as it was an IDE drive anyway.

I've got all the CF-29 Drivers, the problem is getting XP on the HDD

I understand now XP should go straight on an IDE drive without loading any drivers.

Next step is to get another HDD and try it.

Cheers All for the advice and help

Anybody know where to get a cheap IDE HDD for this ? (UK)

Help! G73JH freezing without GSOD's

1. Got G73JH around 3-4 months ago.

2. Was fine until it started freezing in&out of game (GSOD in-game, and freezing without a GSOD out of game) like a week ago.

3. Tried All the G73JH Problems and solutions here! and it was fine for about 2 days and I started getting GSOD's again.

4. Tried ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- FAQ G73JH FAQ Why my G73JH will have GSOD, when playing games? and it was fine for another 2-3 days. Now, I don't even get GSOD's. Whether I'm in/out of game, the screen stays the same and freezes (I still get the weird repeating noise when it freezes).

5. Now I'm here. What do I do? I read a thread about how downloading ATI 10.1 version can solve this. Is it true? Should I bring it to where I bought it (bestbuy)? Thanks!

Reply 1 : Help! G73JH freezing without GSOD's

You havn't mentioned whether or not you've actually done the vbios update. You said you tried all the solutions, but ... wow, that's a lot. That's like saying you follow ALL the commandments in the bible, not just the big 10.

Reply 2 : Help! G73JH freezing without GSOD's

well, I tried I. Creative Issue and II. GSOD (I followed each and every step of it). Also, I was wondering if putting my computer to sleep has anything to do with this problem. I reinstalled my ATI driver again, since it seems to fix the problem temporarily. But I have a feeling it's gonna start freezing again soon. Is contacting with RMA the best option? Or are there other threads that I should look into? Thanks.

Reply 3 : Help! G73JH freezing without GSOD's

1) What motherboard BIOS are you running?

2) What vBIOS version is installed?

3) What Catalyst is installed?

Reply 4 : Help! G73JH freezing without GSOD's

Hmm this is weird. For some reason I can't open up my CCC, and it just says something has stopped working. Maybe I did something wrong with reinstalling ATI driver? Is there any other way to check the version of it?

Sorry, I'm a computer noob How do I check what kind of BIOS and vBIOS I have?

Reply 5 : Help! G73JH freezing without GSOD's

Here is a bit from my guide.... This will tell you how to check both.

STEP 1)Update Vbios. The vBios which came with your G73 are most likely not the most current. To check right click anywhere on your desktop and select "Catalyst Control Center". On the top left corner of this window select "Graphics" then "Information Center". Then select "Graphics Hardware". Look at your BIOS Version. If it doesn't say 012.020.000.032, then you should update. If does say 012.020.000.032, then go to the next step. If you are using Catalyst 11.1 or higher, you will need to scroll down to "Information", select "Hardware" and scroll down to see the BIOS version.

STEP 2) Update BIOS. You can check by booting up your laptop and hitting F2 as soon as the Asus logo appears. Once you enter the bios look at your bios version number. If it doesn't say 209, 211, or 213 you should update. 209 and 211 are the same except 211 runs the fans at higher RPMs, so it will keep your laptop cooler at the expense of slightly more fan noise. 213 is the same as 211 but supposedly fixes the keyboard lag issue. As the JH already has temperature issues, I recommend 211 or 213, especially if you live in a hot climate.

Reply 6 : Help! G73JH freezing without GSOD's

Much appreciated ValkerieFire, here is what I found:

BIOS Information

BIOS Vendor: American Megatrends

Version: G73Jh 211

VBIOS Version: 012.017.000.004.0359.A33G

EC Version: b12c180203

*As of now, if I don't put my computer to sleep (as long as I shut it off), it seems to be okay. But the fact that my CCC isn't working and such... there must be something seriously wrong with my computer :P

Reply 7 : Help! G73JH freezing without GSOD's

same thing happened to my for 2-3 days straight, but i fixed it somehow..

i think i updated the bios and vbios and i got the latest ccc

Reply 8 : Help! G73JH freezing without GSOD's

Bump... So now that I know my Bios and vBios version, what do I do now?
