Does anyone like this?

Running Chrome in Ubuntu 10.10. Occasionally my browser opens with a line at the bottom showing downloads. I just deleted 27 of them and now have 5 make that 6 more. Every time I read another post I get another download.

Who what is dar.youknowbest dot com? Why is it necessary to download to my machine?

I suppose someone knows how to block it but it irritates me that I can't make a move with-out this crap.

Here's a tidbit.

Beautiful, Microsoft and Google have figured out a way to get their "eCommerce" crap onto a Linux machine. Those boys sure keep busy. I really think its time for me to switch to Chrome.

Vostro 3400 vs Vostro 3450

Hi.

I'm considering buying Vostro 3450 this or next week and I've been googling for Vostro 3450 reviews without luck. What bothers me is whether the flaws Vostro 3400 had are fixed in Vostro 3450. What I have in mind is:

1) Flexibility of the screen lid (does it bend when a modest amount of pressure is applied)

2) Quality of the screen (contrast, brightness)

3) Quality of the speakers (is the quality of the sound any better than Vostro 3400's)

Any other feedback covering Vosro 3450's functionality is greatly appreciated.

Reply 1 : Vostro 3400 vs Vostro 3450

I have the 3450 so I can help you answer some question:

1. No, the screen on 3450 is built TOUGH and it doesn't flex/bend at all

2. brightness is on the average side...although this is not a multimedia laptop

3. I can't say anything regarding the comparison of 3450's speakers to 3400 but I think the speaker is on average....maybe a bit on the low side

Reply 2 : Vostro 3400 vs Vostro 3450

Thanks for the feedback. It's hard to see anyone having this model. It must be pretty unpopular. Anyway, I'm glad to know the flex of the screen lid is gone. A few more question:

1) does the laptop run cool during light-average use?

2) is battery life anywhere near Dell's indication (up to 6hrs with 6cell and up to 12 with 9cell)

3) overal feeling about the laptop. Do you regret buying it and would rather have spent the money on another product? Or are you satisfied with it?

It's gonna be my first notebook, so I want it to last for at least 3 years.

Unfortunately, Vostro 3450 is apparently not going to be available at my country (Lithuania), so I think I will have to go for a 3550. Anyway, I guess 3450 and 3550 differs only by their size, so the same problems and performance should apply to both of them.

Reply 3 : Vostro 3400 vs Vostro 3450

1. yes, definitely

2. haha no, I have the i5 - 2410m (2.3Ghz and turbo to 2.9Ghz) with intel HD 3000 graphic and on average use it should last around 3hours and on lowest screen brightness, it lasts nearly 4hours

3. I don't regret at all especially when I got core i5 2410m with 2years next-day warranty...for $570! The quality is definitely above average, making my recent XPS 17 (L701X) feels cheap! LOLzz. For $570, I highly doubt I would be able to buy any laptop (of any brand) with the same specifications and quality.

I asume you have a 6-cell battery in your Vostro?

Can you believe here in Chile this Vostro and 3550 costs almost US$1300?? Both with this configuration:

Intel Core i-2410m

6GB Dual Channel 1333Mhz DDR3 Ram

Amd Radeon HD 6630m 1GB

LED Screen 1366x768

500GB HDD 7200RPM

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

Microsoft Office 2010 Starter

Tren Micro Worry-Free Security 15 Months

6-cell Battery.

What do you think about it?

I think it's too much...

Anyway look at this 3550 Review (I think differences between 3550 and 3450 are little):

Thanks for the link, but I have already seen that review. As far as the price goes, maybe it's a little too steep, for the same specifications, except with 4GB ram instead of 6GB, here in Lithuania costs 1176USD.

LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

I'm on my 2nd LN52A750 in 3 months. The first one would turn on and off by itself, so I finally returned it. The 2nd model is now doing the same thing. Not only does it turn on and off by itself every 10-15 seconds, but there is no picture or sound. Has anyone else had this type of issue with this model?

atn1116,

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your television turning off.

We have a firmware update that addresses this. You can find that information and direction on how to update your television at the following link.

I am having the same issue w/ the TV turning on and off by itself. How are you supposed to install the update if you can't even turn the TV on?????

Reply 3 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

Con_ess,

In that case, you will probably want to call 800-SAMSUNG and have your unit serviced. I'm sorry to hear that you are also having this issue. But if it won't stay on, I would definitely suggest having an authorized technician check it out.

--HDTech

Reply 4 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

Would you honor an extended warranty to ensure this won't happen again? It would seem that this is a bug and I would hate to have to pay $$$ to fix an issue that is a known bug outside of my warranty. Granted I still have another year or so, but still. This is a hassle! Other than this problem, I am loving the TV, but this needs to be corrected and I feel like the consumers should be compesated by an extended warranty free of charge.

Reply 5 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

I don't have the authority to offer warranty extensions.

Registering your product online does get you an additional 3 months on top of the 1 year standard, so if you haven't already, at least sign up for that.

Outside of that, that's an issue that you'd have to take up with our customer care. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Well I finally made my decision to get the Samsung LN52A750 and ran into this thread this morning. Wow!!! I'm not sure what to do now. I can't imagine spending $2500 on a panel and then wondering whenif the on off cycle will start. Samsung really dropped the ball on this and more consumers should be made aware of this possibleprobably issue.

Reply 7 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

So a Samsung technician came out (12/29/08) and replaced the ENTIRE MAINBOARD to my LN52A750 and then proceeded to apply the firmware update. I asked him what could have happened that would require a replacement and he didn't have an answer. I also asked if it was something that I could have done and he replied by saying DEFINITELY NOT. I hope that this doesn't happen again and that this was a fluke.

Would the firmware patch or lackof have caused this issue? Typically what is the root cause of this? How can I prevent something like this from happening in the future?

Lastly, just to confirm, what is the part number for the mainboard? I want to doublecheck to make sure the technician put in the right one (i am 99% sure he did, but wanted to be certain).

Reply 8 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

You can check the parts on the samsungparts.com website or contact your technician.

My 40" LCD just began clicking several times when turning on after Tech replaced "the panel" last week. This morning it keeps clicking and will not turn on at all. I've swapped to a known working power outlet, but no change. I can unplug it for 10 mins, plug it in, and it just starts clicking before i use the power button.

Is any part of the power button or power supply replaced as part of "the panel"? My room mate watched the tech replace the panel and says that he replaced just about everything but the plastic outter part.

I called NISI(local Samsung repair) this morning, but they didn't have an answer on "what they're going to do about it" until the tech gets back to the office.

I'm a little upset now because i reported the problem with the picture on 12/31/08 and it took them alsmost a month to fix that.. Now, its COMPLETELY inoperable. I would think NISI would do something RIGHT AWAY about it. This is a major purchase, its only been a year and is the only TV i have.

Thanks for any input!

I have a SamSucks model number LN52A650 and it just turned off one day and never turned on again. I called SamSucks and they told me it's out of warranty by a few months and that I was on my own. SamSucks also told me that my TV was not part of the capacitor problem so they would not provide service to try and fix it, basically they said HaHaHa sucker we gotcha money now and you got a 52" dinner tray. So I purchased a new Power Board for $165.00 (ouch) and guess what? Didn't fix the problem, same thing as before, the TV just makes that start up sound and I heard a click sound coming from the Power Board and the TV wont turn on. So now Im thinking about replacing my T-Con Board at a cost of around $65.00! The best thing everyone here can do is to tell everyone they know not to buy ANYTHING SamSung. I have already stopped several people and friends from buying SamSung. remember it's SamSucks for now on!

I am yet another customer experiencing the on/off cycling problem on my Samsung LCD TV. My model is a LN46A650, which was purchased on NewEgg.com 08/17/2008. The problem first appeared on 04/15/2009, so I am lucky enough to still be under warranty.

The first time it happened was in the morning after it had been off all night. After turning on the power, the TV cycled on and off automatically about 4-6 times before it stayed on (at which point, it stayed on without incident the rest of the day).

The next morning the same thing happened, though this time it cycled on/off about 8-10 times before staying on (again, it was fine then the rest of the day). However, at this point I realized there must be a problem with the TV, so I googled and discovered this thread.

I located and downloaded the Firmware update for my model and applied it as directed through the wiselink usb port. After applying the firmware update, I turned the TV off and then back on to see if it fixed the problem. It came back on without issue, so I assumed the problem resolved.

However, upon turning the TV on this morning - it went back into the same on/off reboot cycle and did so about 16-20 times before it would stay on. After realizing the firmware did not fix this issue and that the problem was getting worse - I called Samsung Customer Service to schedule a service call.

I am now waiting to hear back from a technician as to when they can come over to look at the TV. I was told someone should get back to me within 24 to 48 hours, so I am hoping this isn't going to take a month or longer to be resolved as other people have reported.

Because this exact problem appears to be a chronic issue for so many other people (and between varied models), I must say that my consumer confidence in Samsung is severely shaken. It seems quite apparent that a batch of their LCD TV's shipped with faulty or bad hardware. Because of this and the product price range we're talking about, there should be an automatic warranty extension in effect for all consumers having this issue with their TV. As mentioned above, I'm lucky enough to still be under warranty - but had this happened a month or two past that point, I would have been pretty upset if they refused to fix it.

tarzanna,

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear that you're also experiencing these issues.

Seems that this issues has been around for a while now, but after following this thread, there seems to be some differences in opinion as to the root cause of the problem. So... what is the root cause?

FYI, I am one of the people who this has happened to, but I simply exchanged for the same model (Dec07, LN40A750).

Reply 14 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

r_handy,

I don't have a definitive answer on that. There seem to be different fixes for the same symptom.

--HDTech

Reply 15 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

Mr. Samsung,

We would appreciate it if you could give us what seems to be the root cause of this ON-OFF death. This problem has been rolling and SAMSUNG would have already come up with the root-cause, they could have deduced all the problem reports they have received directly from customers, retailers, repair sub-contractors. Since the TV is mass produced, the means of production are all the same and there might really be a root cause.

Please ask Samsung, we would patiently wait for an answer.

Thanks,

Reply 16 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

ybrik_5,

There is not necessarily a root cause, as even this thread indicates different fixes solving the issue. Each of these are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Reply 17 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

Just wanted to update my original posting from two days ago. As of this morning, my Samsung LCD tv will no longer stop the on/off cycle and remains in a constant reboot loop (previously it had eventually turned on after a dozen or so on/off cycles). It won't even allow me to power it off now (unless, of course, I unplug it and leave it unplugged).

The good news, however, is that things have progressed more quickly in terms of repair than I was expecting. I called Samsung today so I could update my support ticket with the elevated severity of the situation, at which point, they gave me the name and number of our local repair shop who would be doing the service for us.

After making a call to the repair shop, they told me they received Samsung's work order and had already ordered the part for the TV. They expect to have it fixed in 5 days. What I found curious, however, was that they did all this without even having seen our TV yet. So I can only assume that the problem is now common enough that Samsung has identified the problem area and is recommending the specific replacement part in their work orders. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't see how else our repair shop could have ordered any parts without first inspecting our TV.

Anyways, I'm still disappointed that this happened to begin with - but am relieved the delay won't be as severe as I feared. I should mention, however, that our local shop said they've seen this issue with some of Samsung's LCD TVs before - though they still recommended Samsung as a good TV brand.

I'll be sure to make another update post once we get our TV back.

Reply 18 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

My repair shop also ordered the main circuit board and power supply without seeing my set. The shop simply went by the power-cycle description I submitted via Samsung's product support site. The technician replaced the circuit board which fixed the issue. Fortunately, my set is still under warranty because I found out from the technician that the board itself costs $1K.

Reply 19 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

Will the firmware fix the power cycle on my LN40A? I had it in the service center over the weekend. They say thet replaced the PS capacitors. It was okay for 24 hours. This afternoon the cycling started but stopped after a while, so I can do the update I guesss?

Reply 23 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

I picked up my TV from the shop yesterday and was told that they replaced the LCD panel and T-Con board. They said that the LCD panel was defective. The TV works so far and I am hoping that it continues to work.

Reply 24 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

Did you have the special automatic on off issue as well? Why did you have to bring your tv in for repair?

Reply 25 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

Problem description: upon plugging in the TV the front LED blinked, the relays clicked, the melody played, and then the whole process repeated. No picture no sound. Basically, it was trying to turn on, but for whatever reason, it couldn't.

Reply 26 : LN52A750 Turning on and off by itself

I have the same problem. I bought in 9/2008. The TV turns on for a few second, plays the melody, then click off. Then turns on by itself again. The remote does not control anything. Unplug it for awhile, then plugging back it in. The TV just starts up on its own repeating the same cycle.

The latest Firmware update says the update fixes this type of issue, but the Samsung cust rep said that there is no way for me to update the F/W or force the update because I cannot get to the update screen.

I am waiting on a technician to call now.

But I am surprised by what they had to do to your set. Wow, they had to replace the LCD panel and a board. How long have you had the TV before this problem occured for you?

Sounds like this is a common problem but perhaps the remedy is not the same for everyone.

I have a been an avid Samsung supporter but not sure now. I have recommended Samsung to so many people but I can't say I will continue do that.

Samsung should consider extending warranties to people with problems as it seems this is a common problem. You shouldn't have to buy extended warranties for these type of defects.

Thanks,

I am having the same issue. Bought the TV on 9/5/2008. Went to the store yesterday, 2/18/09 and bought bluray to hook up to the TV. I set up the bluray and was watching a movie, I went to turn off the player and the tv just freaked out and now just keeps turning off and on. I unplugged it and when I plugged it back in the same thing happened. I called SAMSUNG and got a customer service rep who also told me of the firmware update, and I too cannot update the software b/c the TV will not stay on. I agree that Samsung should tell you about the problem BEFORE it becomes an issue. Yes updating the software would be a pain, but this is even more bothersome. I am now waiting for the repair service to call, and from reading everyone's posts, I assume I will have to have something replaced. Not happy about this. I did buy an exptended warranty. Now I am unsure if the BLueray freaked out the tv or it was bound to happen and it is just a coincidence that it happened when I hooked up the bluray. Oh jeez, I just wanted to watch Batman! What a pain.

Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

Uninstalling the Intel HD Graphics Controller and reinstalling just the monitor driver has solved the issue for me. Now, the screen looks just fine - no bluishness and much better contrast. Not as good as one would expect from an expensive laptop but the difference this made is huge.

Reply 1 : Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

Strange. Do you need the HD graphics drivers at all?

Reply 2 : Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

Yes, otherwise the max resolution option is 1024x768.

Btw, after a reboot the screen became bluish again. I really don't know what to do. At least we know that the driver may be the culprit. Sorry for misleading you, guys.

Reply 3 : Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

Damn.

Any chance some calibration might help? How are the blacks? For me, as long as the blacks are clear and distinguishable, I'll probably be ok with other colors not coming out terrifically.

Reply 4 : Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

Try preventing all of the Intel graphics utilities from launching in MSCONFIG.

Reply 5 : Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

Guess the screen isn't as bad as we initially thought it was. Did you get the latest driver from Intel or was it from Lenovo's site.

Reply 6 : Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

The driver I installed was from Intel.

Reply 7 : Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

My experience is that the Intel applet overrides the Windows calibration profiles. So either disable the Intel apps (reduces process count, but also might keep it from going into power save on battery) or calibrate manually with the Intel app.

Reply 8 : Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

Colonel, I could not find any way to disable the Intel app. It seems to be bundled with the driver.

Reply 9 : Eureka!!! T420 Screen Problem (Partially?) Solved

For 4500MHD chipsets, it's igfxtray.exe and igfxpers.exe. A lot of people disable those two with that chipset because it automatically lower the refresh rate on battery. What Intel items do you have in msconfig->Startup?

Hey all,

Just wanted to stop by and say I'm a new toshiba laptop owner!

So far so good. The screen is pretty nice and even though the buttons on the keyboard seem to be a bit smaller, the keyboard has a nice tactile feel to it.

I've been using a macbook air for 2-3 years now (when it first came out) and it's been crapping out a bit lately and the 60gb (or 80?) HD just doesn't cut it. The battery life is down to like 1.5 hours now.

How's the fan noise on the Toshiba? I was looking at it and it was hard to determine at the store how loud the fan is.

Reply 2 : Just got the new R835-P50X

I got mine from Best Buy also. Everything is fine, it's decent, but... I am so, so disappointed with the sound quality. And this sucks, because I'm a music freak. Listening anything with headphones especially is killing me. Does anyone know any tips or tricks to get rid of the crackling sound? It is extremely annoying. The onboard speakers suck too, but hey, it's a laptop, I'm not expecting any good kind of sound out of them anyway.

EDIT: Ok, since I haven't really been able to try it out that much so far, it might be that this problem only appears with YouTube. Have to do some more testing in the morning.

I found Toshiba PC Health Monitor and it doesn't say the speed of the fan in rpm, but instead in %. For me, this little laptop is silent. It's only my second laptop and after the Acer Aspire I had, this thing is almost noiseless.

Right now, I've had my laptop on for almost an hour on balanced power plan and the fan speed shows 36%. It's pretty silent. Let's see if I have the time later today or the near future to do some more extensive reviewing of this device, but all in all I have to say it's been great. The sound issues I was talking about last night seem to appear only on YouTube, so even if frustrating, it's not that big of a deal afterall.

It feels sturdy except for one of the silver covers of the hinges connecting the screen with the rest of the body in my laptop has become loose. Not a big deal, since it's only a cover to give laptop a nice silver touch on the otherwise stylish black case. A little bit of super glue should fix that.

Reply 5 : Just got the new R835-P50X

If you turn the machine on and do nothing what speed does the fan show after 5mins, one of the complaints about the previous model is that the fan was always on.

From my limited experience with mine and friends' laptops, I'd say one of the worst built in speakers. It sure gets loud, something my old Acer couldn't do, but the quality is pretty bad. Probably someone more experienced can say more about this. As far as I can tell and to my taste, laptop speakers always suck.

Lack of Bluetooth surely sucks and makes you wonder how can they still leave it out. That was probably the only reason why I doubted buying this laptop, but I figured I can still hook my phone into the USB slot, which is probably the only device I would connect to my laptop via Bluetooth. 3 USB slots is ok, but a 4th one wouldn't have had hurt, just to make sure you don't run out of USB slots.

I know what you mean, we all would like the notebook we are buying to have everything we could think of. It just isn't realistic, it will either be too expensive, too bulky/heavy, etc. I wish it had a back lit keyboard as well as available mSATA myself.

The main attraction of the R835 for me is the weight. If the R835 wasn't 3.2lbs, would there really be a hard reason to consider it? There are many "lightweight" notebooks in the 4-5lb range, even a few in the 3-4lb range but which in the sub 4lb range has what the R835 have? I haven't come across one yet, if I missed something in this weight range with a dvd drive, someone let me know.

Ordered my new Dell - will it have bloatware?

OK....so after many months of questions and answers on this board, I finally purchased a laptop from the Dell Outlet....hoping I got a good deal. Anyway...I keep reading about bloatware. I'm not sure how to find it on the computer, or how to get rid of it.

Here is my soon to be new laptop. Does anyone know if it will be loaded with bloatware and if so....how do I get rid of it?

I actually paid $786 (including $50 of taxes) for the laptop after using a coupon....hope I got a good deal.

Thanks,

Cheryl

Reply 1 : Ordered my new Dell - will it have bloatware?

Absolutely. It's not as bad as other brands though, HP has tons of it. One thing I liked about HP was in their recovery options, there was an option to restore with only the drivers and none of the bloatware. I don't know if Dell's recovery has that option...I'm sure someone that has run through that process on the XPS 15 can answer that.

Reply 2 : Ordered my new Dell - will it have bloatware?

Doesn't have that much bloatware in my opinion. I couldn't be bothered to start from scratch so just went to control panel and removed everything I didn't want.

One thing I didn't like was the Java auto updater, even in control panel the 'Update' tab is missing so you can't turn off automatic checks. Need to go to registry to remove that.

Reply 3 : Ordered my new Dell - will it have bloatware?

Bloatware is just like any software: Go to the control panel -> Programs -> Uninstall a Program (or Programs and Features) and remove what you want to remove.

How do you know if it is bloatware? Well, you can either google it or if you have any specific questions, you could always ask here. My personal opinion, is that any software that I don't use regularly or don't foresee being useful to me in the future, is bloatware. Additionally, if the functionality of said software already covered just as well (or better in many cases) by Windows? If so, it's bloatware. So, for me, this means I remove all of Intel's Wireless/Networking software (only need the drivers, Window's can handle the rest). I tend to run a fairly tidy operation when it comes to my computer... if only I could say the same about the rest of my life :P

*edit: Also, it might be worth pointing out that I have NEVER reinstalled Windows 7 on my laptop since I received it from Dell. With past versions of Windows (particularly pre-Vista), I felt that Windows tends to accumulate junk and slow down over time. Thus far (almost a year to this day), I've never once felt that my computer is slower than it has been in the past. In fact, I think I have this baby running so well, it is probably faster now than it was before

I used to do that, but honestly Java has so many security holes so often it's better to let it update automatically.

Or just do without. How many Java sites does one come across? I know Java sites exist (Yahoo! Games being the most prolific that comes to mind), but I also think a lot of people update the plugin because they've had it installed since 1997.

models with easy access buttons

Hi all, I wonder what do you think about the new asus models and their simple look. I had an G1S (RIP) and I really liked the easy access buttons and lights, actually it was a perfect notebook.

Anyway now I want to buy a new Asus but most of the models seem to be simple, only with the power button and that's it (leaving out the extreme models). Some Toshiba models look really cool. but I only trust Asus.

Do you miss these buttons or it's just me?

Bottom Half Of Screen Not Displaying

I have a Samsung Q210 that I picked up by the screen and it's like I shorted something out. Only the top half of the screen displays now. Can anyone advise me on the best action to take. Is it the screen, inverter, motherboard that would need to be replaced? Have I got a laptop only fit for spares?

Reply 1 : Bottom Half Of Screen Not Displaying

I would check the cable serving the display starting with the connectors at each end. It's definitely not the inverter (otherwise the whole display would be black) and you can check the mainboard by connecting an external display.

Cool. Which processor did you get? How is the fan noise? is the fan blowing all the time like even when it's idling or only on load?

I'm deciding between the dm3 and the Probook 5310m with the intel SP93000 processor and the fan noise is a key factor in my decision.

LED screen is awesome, it's unquestionably the best screen I have ever used, deep dark blacks. No fan noise that I notice, but let me open 15 tabs in IE to verify that! The HP set-up software was outstanding and uses a cool 60s-like font that made me chuckle!

Play with it! Want to hear your thoughts, I saw this one early this morning and was impressed. The AMD Neo processor had very snappy performance in Windows 7 and actually scored a better Windows Experience CPU score than the SU4100 and SU7300 laptops I saw. SU4100s came in at 4.0 on average, SU7300 at 4.1, and Neo L335 at 4.2.

I just ordered it too and it's set aside for me for store pickup. Used bing and got 10% extra off at Office Depot!

Did you actually get the bing cash back? Generally when there are already coupons and savings used in the deal, the cash back rewards dont work. Sometimes it shows up at Bing account as pending and it may not be honored later on. Please confirm.

First time I've heard this. I went with the AMD L335 simply because of price. It also helps a little that I've built a PC with an AMD Athlon back in the day.. and have a laptop from 2004 that still works well with its Athlon XP-M processor.

I couldnt find real reason why the Intel offering would perform $100 better.. except for battery life. As long as the AMD can give me 5-6 hours use.. (enough for a coast to coast flight) then that absolutely fine with me. Finding out the AMD scores as good, or better, than the Intel offering makes me even happier with bang for the buck purchase!

Performance between the 2 chips was the only question mark I had left.

3% rebate on dell purchase

I used every coupon code dell had and will get 3% back on top of that. Every little bit adds up. Just passing this along. Go to the search box and type in dell and it will take you to the 3% link. Hope this helps

Holiday cottage wifi help!

Right, I need some help!
I love in some holiday cottages, in the middle of nowhere, we pay for 8mb/s broadband but BT can only give us about 500kb/s, we have tried with other providers but because of the distance to the distributor (or whatever the technical term is) this is about as good as it will get in the near future.

Back to the holiday cottages- we live on a site of 9 holiday cottages, mostly converted barns, with extremely thick walls. In our house we have a BT Business-hub Wireless router, and this covers most of the house. The cottages only cover a small area, probably about 100m max width across (but with very thick walls).

What we are wanting is to offer wi-fi connection into all the cottages, or at least part of all of the. Currently we run a USB dongle system which is useless, the connection is slow (no 3G) and doesn't work inside- plus we only have two and they are becoming more and more demanded between 9 cottages.

Could somebody please float a few ideas how we could do this? Hopefully without us having to change our current BT hug (which is model BT2700HGV)

Ideally we would like to use minimal wiring- we cannot reach 6 of the cottages through a cable because they are on the other side of the drive (and laying a cable would be too costly).

Hope somebody has some advice! Thanks, Jamie.

Reply 1 : Holiday cottage wifi help!

Did you try AC POWERLINE NETWORKING?

Reply 2 : Holiday cottage wifi help!

The cottages are all converted farm buildings, and they have been done in stages over the last 30 years. They all run off separate electric circuits, within some cottages there are two sets of circuit breakers, does this mean that using AC powerline networking wouldn't work?

Reply 3 : Holiday cottage wifi help!

Which means I can not answer your question post above.

Sorry but it does not mean it won't work. However I find folk that can't try it.

What will stop it cold is when the AC branch is on the other side of a transformer or on the other leg. The other leg can be solved with a little thought.

Samsung Optical Audio out

Does anyone know if the optical out will take audio from the analogue inputs and output to the optical output as well as the digital tuner. This would enable the TV sound to be output (via an optical to analogue converter) to a 2 channel amp that doesn't have optical inputs.

cracked gx640 lcd bezel

my lcd bezel cracked on one side when I was removing it to do screen swap, is there anywhere to get another? all i could find was rkcomputers and they don't do international shipping

atm i've just glued it together & wrapped some tape round the crack, but i would prefer to replace the whole thing if possible.

Reply 1 : cracked gx640 lcd bezel

guess that's a no, there I was thinking i'd bought something with good build quality and the flimsy bezel just snaps, my sager laptop had a better quality bezel....

Reply 2 : cracked gx640 lcd bezel

at the least the screen upgrade went well...eventually, stupid company sent two wrong screens, but then i managed to find a inverter extension cable and now it's installed. sent the 1st screen back and sent some emails to the company telling them how bad they are.

Reply 3 : cracked gx640 lcd bezel

That bezel is incredibly flimsy... Have you tried looking bezel for gx620/gx630/gt62x? The gt640 use the same chassis as those so you might be able to find something more easily since they have been around for a while.

Win7x64 Homegroup shared folders

I have two laptops(Win7x64 Home Premium) and a desktop(Win7x64 Professional)set up to use Homegroup. I can access each computer from the other, however, the desktop folders that are set to Specific Person under shared can not be accessed by either laptop; public folder is ok. I am using Live ID on all three computers. I tried to add the folders to the libraies that I can access and I still can not access them. However, the odd thing, to me anyway, is if I use Explorer and type the Desktop address I can access the folders. Any idea on how to correct this? Thanks.

Reply 1 : Win7x64 Homegroup shared folders

"if I use Explorer and type the Desktop address I can access the folders."

Now all you may want to do is to place a link to said folder where you want it.

Yeah, only problem is that the previous version 8440w was never released in Europe, I doubt this one will, but we'll know in june.

I can't believe they aren't showing FX1000M. I'm guessing the GDDR3 Firepro card offered is pretty weak...would like to be proved wrong though.

Every elitebook so far from the XX60 series is a downgrade in graphics...

Ok, ok the quadro 5010 should be strong in 8760w (but very expensive).

Only hope now that the m5950 will be an upgrade in 8560w (or it will be a terrible downgrade in 8760w)

Not only did they leave out the backlit keyboard for this model, they also left out the DreamColor display as well...What a shame. The larger models are heavy enough and this has the better weight/portability factor.

It should have at least come with an HD+ IPS display standard, like the Thinkpad X220. How disappointing!

Reply 7 : HP Elitebook 8460w Leaked

Yeah, Dreamcolor on a 14" would be very nice, maybe next year -

So, other than the option for the i7-2830QM and the video card, what's the difference between this and the 8460p?

I, too wish someone made a 14" laptop with a solid display.

L502X delivery in tamilnadu,india

I paid for a XPS 15 (L502x) with i5 2410m processor, nvidea 525m 1gb card and 6gb DDR3 ram on 31st March using a credit card.today we r on the 6th and the status is still WIP(work in progress). There is a DELL manufacturing unit in sriperambadur,Chennai itself, As of today the estimated delivery date is not confirmed.Could anyone please let me know how long this process is to take.Isn't it too long a period for status to be updated.

Reply 1 : L502X delivery in tamilnadu,india

I have ordered many times from Dell and 95% of the time it arrives before the estimated delivery date. The rest of the time it pushes close to the actual delivery date.

I wouldn't stress that your laptop is not progressing as you would like. I've read that some of the electronic supply companies that are in Japan have been affected by the recent quake. So some parts are now harder to get.

Don't worry you will get your laptop.

This was booked under EPP, so called my friend, according to him the demand is more so it will take about 2 weeks, but the EDD posted early was a period of 15 days. The Dell CS asks me to contact my sales rep, also I doubt Customer service works on the weekends, will have to call them monday..... dunno If I am the only one so obsessed waiting to lay my hands on this lappy :-)

Booked my Dell XPS 15 L502x on 31/3 and got confirmation on 1/4, the EDD was set as 18/4 within the next couple of days and hasn't changed since. Currently the status reads 'work in progress'.

The Dell rep told me when I placed the order itself that since it was a new system that just launched, that it would take longer than the usual 7 - 10 days to be delivered.

Hoping it gets here sometime this week for the sake of my sanity. Am going quite crazy checking the status every chance I get.

Do you mean is there a fix to making the remote fit better in the laptop? Probably not? Is it stubborn and just wont go in gradually? Well I'd rather have this issue than like an Audio problem lol.

hax0r and wayne - i got my dv7t in sept of 08 and maaad people complained of the same issue - having to press the control in really hard to get it out.

Occasionally my screen goes blank for 2-3 seconds and then comes back. Windows then says the nvidia driver stopped working but recovered.

I'm using 186.44, which I believe is the latest version. Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Anyone else experience this?

X360 34p freeze up randomly - please help if you are an owner of samsung x360

Hi, everyone. I have installed Windows 7 laterly on my samsung x360. The laptop froze up for no reason after several minutes, it happened randomly when I open IE, a file or even the download complete notice will cause the trouble. everything works fine when the AC adaptor is pluged in , but if it is running on battery, problems occured. I have similar problem on VISTA, but it is after some driver upgrade I guess. When I got this laptop, everything works just fine. so I suspect the driver is the resource of problem. But I find it hard to convinced myself that a upgrade of driver from samsung will cause such a big problem. I do also suspect if it is indeed a hardware failure, if so I d rush to send it to samsung to check it out, since I am still under 1 year warranty period. Thanks in advance for any advise.

Your problem has some similarity to a BSOD I was occasionally getting on my Dell E6400. We have the same Intel X4500 graphics (but I'm running XP).

About a month ago, Microsoft's crash analyser advised me to disable Write Combing (Display properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot). So far, the BSOD's haven't reoccurred.

---can't change it since the button is gray-out in my system

Updated: I sent it in, and was told that they change the whole battery compartment, or something, I am not too sure, maybe they just replace my motherboard. Install Win-7, and works fine so far. My warranty is running out quick, does anyone know if I can buy extended warranty? I am worrying whether it is going to happen again. If so, I will say it is a hardware design or qualitity issue. Since I see so many people here with same issue.

I think the problem I had on my E6400 was fixed when I changed a setting for write combing in the graphics driver. However, I can't find where that setting is.

You may want to try a different version of the graphics driver. It is very unlikely that the hardware itself has a problem.

I've got exactly the same problem with my X360. Everything works fine as long as it is plugged in, but on battery the system freezes after some minutes. This happens even on a newly installed Windows 7 system without having installed any additional drivers. However, it takes about 30 min until it is happening. With installing a driver for the Intel graphics device, things get even worse: The system freezes after some 2-5 min. Thus, it seems the problem is related to the graphics driver. I tried every Intel and Samsung driver for both x86 and x64 versions of Windows 7, but it doesnt change anything. Disabling the display themes and effects does not help either.

The system has been running perfect on the pre-installed Vista. The above mentioned write combing option does not exist in Windows 7. In summary, it seems there is no solution to that problem so far, and I will go back to Vista. Let me know if you have made any progress.

well, even goes back to the factory vista, it wont solve the problem. I sent it back to samsung to checkup. Seems like a hardware related issue. Will update any info later.

I am having the exact same issue using the version of Vista Business that was installed when I bought it.

34p is the 1 with SSD ?

Reply 6 : X360 34p freeze up randomly - please help if you are an owner of samsung x360

I've been having the exact same issue and it's driving me crazy. It only started after I installed Windows 7 Business. It randomly freezes in the same manner described above, and only when on battery power. Does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking it might be related to power management, since it's only a symptom of battery power...Dunno. I'm getting desperate for an answer.

Reply 7 : X360 34p freeze up randomly - please help if you are an owner of samsung x360

My Samsung X360 running Fedora 13 (Linux system) freezes exactly in the same way, max. 5 minutes after unplugging. I suppose that this is related to some power managment bug in the newest Intel graphics drivers.

(Using older drivers, shipped in Fedora 9-10 no freezes were observed)

I would appreciate any info on how to solve this - irrespectively on the system used - maybe thanks to BIOS upgrade or something?

best regards,

Karol

If the Linux driver has the same display control panel as the Windows driver then there are some power settings options on the display settings page. Click on the modify settings button and disable all the options. If that fixes the freezing problem then it shows that the driver is trying to do something that the BIOS / hardware doesn't support properly.

John

PS: Have your tried BIOS 08LM which was released on 3rd December?

Reply 9 : X360 34p freeze up randomly - please help if you are an owner of samsung x360

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm using the new 08LM BIOS version and I have played with the power options of the Intel driver, but no luck. The system freezes as before.

sony viao sound driver is not working

hi
i am sham .i changed my sony vpccw15fn hard disk and i installed windows 7 on it.i got all other drivers working except sound driver .when i install sound driver i get a message "this update can only work on windows 7"

Reply 1 : sony viao sound driver is not working

If the sony did not come with Windows 7 on it originally, you should have checked the Sony website before upgrading the OS to make sure all the Windows 7 drivers were available.

Go here and choose your country: http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/flash/hub_cons.html

Any CF-27 mods available??

I've got several 500Mhz P3 CF-27 boxes and I wonder if anyone did any mods on the MB or other internals..

I'm planning on turning these boxes into the latest portable auto dynamometer, as they seem fast enough...

I've looked at the other Wiki sites already...( nice job,BTW )

EX308 DLNA video support

I have tried to get a video file to play from dlna a few timeson my EX308 TV. I am interested in getting a AVCHD movie working, but it seems the television does not recognize the file extensions I have tried. I am testing with minidlna. Pictures and Audio work, but video is perplexing me.

Reply 1 : EX308 DLNA video support

The good and bad news is that DLNA and what video encoding is supported is well discussed. The short version is that not all encodings work and we get to play with that until it works.

Many take offense at such and try to make a federal case out of the issue.

OTHER IDEAS are a better DLNA server that can TRANSCODE on the fly. From memory TVERSITY can do that.

Stuck waiting for replacement parts and tech to come out after a week...what do to???

I have a dilemma and I don't know if I should wait or complain...

If you want to read the whole story, go ahead. But in short I've been out a week without my 1730 and I still haven't heard from the tech to come out and replace hardware ( have more hardware that they will have to replace so I'm going to be out even more days )...anyway...do I complain the Dell and ask for a replacement and if so, how do I do that???

Called support for a broken keyboard (courtesy of kids) and having a problem with either the AC adapter and/or battery. But since I wasn't near the system, they were supposed to call back later Friday afternoon. Never got a call back. So I called back in late Friday. Support rep was going to put a service request in for a new keyboard, motherboard, heat-sink and AC adapter. Since they were working on the system anyway, asked about getting the 8700 Nvidia graphics cards replaced as well, didn't have problems, but are part of the bad batch of cards. of course I got the run around of not impacted, blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, get a call Monday from the same Rep, seeing if I remembered talking with him on Friday (don't know why) and told me that the system I was calling in on was no longer under warranty.

I all but yelled at him that YES, the system is under warranty and that I had 50 days left on Friday. Keep in mind this is Monday now. After about 5 minutes of going back and forth he apologizes and states that yes the system is under warranty and that he will put in the service request out for the hardware.

After the call I was able to get the system powered on when I noticed that the LCD screen is damaged. Have to wait for the tech to some out before they will order parts.

I first called Friday. Monday they finally put the service request in. The parts were received by the Tech from FedEx Wednesday morning. It's now Thursday afternoon and I haven't heard from the Tech at all.

Chatted with a support rep to see what the hold up was about the tech coming out. Told me that I had to wait for the tech to come out before I call back in with any problems.

Do I wait....or complain??? HELP!!! Thanks

Reply 1 : Stuck waiting for replacement parts and tech to come out after a week...what do to???

I would think dell could give you some information about the tech, such as their phone number and/or other information so you can contact them directly.

If this continues I don't have the link handy, but I'm sure someone will, for unresolved issues.

Reply 2 : Stuck waiting for replacement parts and tech to come out after a week...what do to???

Dell usually does, or the Tech should be contacting for appt. time when he is about to receive the parts that Dell shipped to him.

Call back Dell (or chat), and ask for the contact information...specially since the tech has the parts....

Reply 3 : Stuck waiting for replacement parts and tech to come out after a week...what do to???

Contacted Dell...after about 30 minutes of waiting for the tech to contact the repair company...supposedly the tech called and couldn't get a hold of me.

Left BOTH my cellphone and home number. No calls received or messages left.

The tech is supposed to call me tomorrow.

I've heard that before from Dell & a Tech....

If you have not received a phone call from the Tech by 9am tomorrow, call Dell and keep on them..Also, you have the right for the Tech's number. Usually, Dell will give you the OnSite Company they are using 800#.

I had this dilemma where they continued to fail to contact me. I was told set dates the engineer would be coming, and was told to stay in from 9am-6pm for the day. I never heard from the engineers on 4 separate occasions despite being told they would have the parts from the phone support and had it confirmed that there was stock yet the delays were consistently then blamed on part shortages.

After alot of complaining; making it clear I had been lied to and let down by their 3rd party and that I had lost a significant amount of income from not working for 3 days, the several hours I wasted on the phone and also that the warranty I was under was a "next working day"

EVENTUALLY they just shipped me a replacement. I bent the truth saying the 3rd party upgrades were installed by the 3rd party I purchased the laptop from rather than myself and received a replacement machine of the same spec I had upgraded it to.
