Dell Studio 1735 laptop backlit keyboard won't light

I have a new Dell Studio 1735 with the backlit keyboard feature, but it doesn't work. Three different people at Dell have sent three extremely different fixes, one even involving "remove the latex skin from keyboard and to check the . . . " I have checked the Quickset setting for the keyboard, and it is activated and the light setting is set for bright. But, the key combo to turn it on and toggle through the light settings does nothing. I surely would appreciate a clear, step-by-step guide to doing what's necessary to activate the feature. If I need to reinstall the Quickset utility, I'd like to be guided through that, too, in basic, simple English, not technospeak! Thanks.
